About

Take from my, “An Introduction” post:

Well hello there! My name is Rob, and this, as you may have guessed, is my anime review blog. I am a Christian, as well as an anime fan, and I wanted to start a blog where I could write anime reviews with content guides for fellow Christian anime fans. I cannot claim any originality for the content guide, though, as I simply took what I saw on the movie reviews at Jesus Freak Hideout. Generally, I will share my thoughts on an episode (with the intent to avoid spoilers), and then include the content guide at the bottom.

While I’m starting this blog during the Winter 2014 season, I actually have a whole slew of reviews from the Fall 2013 season that are ready to go. That said, I will first focus on publishing the current season’s reviews, as I would like to actually have things that are up-to-date and useful on the blog. Plus, my Fall 2013 reviews are pretty bad. I can’t claim to be a superb reviewer, but I think my 2014 reviews are coming out better.

Besides that, I would also like to extend the invitation to any other Christian anime fans who would like to write reviews for the site. I’m only one person, and can only watch so much anime by myself. The more reviewers, the more content, and I would like to possibly have DVD/Blu-Ray reviews one day, as well. On top of that, if you–or anyone you know–is an artist who wouldn’t mind creating some art for the site, then I would appreciate it. We can, of course, discuss the specifics.

Just stumbled across this site while looking for content information on a show. It’s been really helpful, so thank you!

This is what I need. I want reviews that explain to us what kind of fanservice in there. Can you tell us when these inappropiate things happen(Or at least the fanservice). Like if you are watching this on Crunchyroll, watch out at 15:35 bcz you would see such and such, but it will end at 16:15. You get it?
Here is an example from Kuroko’s Basketball Episode 44 on Crunchyroll.

    10:20 – 10:43 –> Alex yuri kiss

Note: I have a couple more scenes from that episode. This isnt the only one.

Sure, I can try to make it a point to do that. I think I have in the past, but I haven’t been very consistent with it. I will try to remember to make it a regular thing for future posts.

wow! I just found this blog and I know It’s going to be so helpful! I was about to give up on anime since it seems like all have inappropriate material, but this has given me hope. Thanks a lot and keep going! I’m going to share this page so more Christian otakus know about it.

I’m glad it can be of service! Anime is definitely a more “mature” (at least, by the world’s definition) art form, and the Japanese culture (or at least, anime culture) seems to hold morals that definitely contrast with Christian morals. Hopefully my reviews will give you enough information about the content to know whether you will or won’t be okay to watch a show/episode, if you need to watch it with someone to keep you accountable, or something along those lines. Of course, remembering that our obligation is to Jesus is a great way to stay accountable and, say, make ourselves look away from that scene we know we shouldn’t watch but really want to watch.

BTW could you separate the fanservice, gore stuff from Christian perspective? I mean it looks like you are repeating what you said in Christian perspective and in the fanservice and gore part
Unless you add more detail in the perspective part

That’s a good point. Maybe I’ll try to make the Christian Perspective more of a discussion on the moral issues Christians may experience because of the content, or something like that, rather than making it a written out section of what can be found in the Content Guide. Alternatively, of course, is the occasional inclusion of positive moral takeaways, such as the theme of forgiveness in The Pilot’s Love Song, which I discussed in a few of the Christian Perspective sections for that show.

Hey, just came across this while looking for pictures for some anime reviews I’ve been doing, and I wanted to thank you for the work you’re doing. I like your format, how you are able to approach each episodes from a critical anime fan perspective, and then dissect what content in there Christians might find offensive. I like how you break it up into the categories, so a person who doesn’t mind foul language, but hates violence, would know what to avoid.

How about add a rating system if you want to? Like one to five. Least/none to greatest/heavy. For example, Nudity/Sex/Fanservice(1/5): a yuri kiss scene happened at 2:01-2:10. If you want to add, I am just making a suggestion that you can do it if you want to. I am not demanding it.

The NIV was translated directly from the original text while the KJV was translated from the German text which was a translation of the original. So the KJV is a translation of a translation, so in other words, the NIV is closer to the original text than the KJV. Also take into account, the KJV was also a translation to please the king of the british empire at the time.

You should watch Angel’s Egg. It’s pretty heavy with Christian symbolism and metaphors, and it’s beautiful! Look it up.

Finally a Christian blog about those of us who really love Christ and also watch anime. Thanks, Rob! Whenever I watch an anime, I review it or talk about it on The Write Web or Community is Possible(both on WordPress), however I wouldn’t mind submitting my thoughts on here too!

I would certainly welcome your thoughts, if you don’t mind working with someone who tends to write reviews and then binge post sometime later, lol!

You are a lifesaver! It is so difficult to find anime that is appropriate for my little brother, but my mother will still approve off! Not to mention parents guids aren’t exactly a dime a dozen. Thankyou so much for putting your time and effort into this, and making it easier for the rest of us!

I am aware that I messaged you earlier, (under another name of Amanda) however I wanted to make a followup comment:

After reading your “About” page I was intrigued by the idea of assisting in writing collaboration. I have written up a proposal document for you, as well as a sample review of the first episode of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Here are the links, please comment on the doc or reply to this message and give me your thoughts. I’ll be awaiting your reply. 🙂

Luna: I would welcome your contributions! I apologize for my late reply (I think I had to do the same the last time, as well). As for your suggestions: I do not shy away from darker anime (in fact, I recently watched Psycho Pass and thoroughly enjoyed it). Creating a restricted section would be a little tricky only because I am not very proficient with WordPress (it took me forever to figure out how to create my long-neglected tab to sort reviews), but as long as WordPress doesn’t limit the number of tabs I can use then I am sure I can figure something out.

WordPress is indeed tricky when you don’t know the engine well. (Don’t worry it took us awhile too) If you need any assistance I’d be happy to help in any way. Creating a running and functional website was our final assignment, intern requiring that learn the engine well. I’m glad you don’t shy away from dark anime as it does consist of a decent chunk of my watch-list 😉 If you haven’t read the doc already, e-mail me at Sparcalcrystal294@hotmail.com (This is a junk e-mail but I will look for you) I have some art concepts for you, if you would like it, and one review of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. I will complete the rest and e-mail them to you after you contact me. 🙂

Hey I’d LOVE to write reviews for your website! I’ve seen a lot of anime, and I don’t mind writing reviews for them! I feel that it is a calling from God for me to reach the Gospel to otakus, and I feel this will help me reach that! Please email me ASAP!

      Micah:

I would love to have more writers on board. As you can see, I’m not nearly as active now as when I started this blog, and I keep falling behind. I started this as an engaged man still living with his mother, and am now married with my own home and my first child on the way. Maintaining the blog by myself is difficult, so having others on board would certainly help. I don’t know a whole lot about WordPress or how we would set it up, but we can work that out together. Shoot me an email at Zephariel2005(at)aol.com if you are still interested!

Rob I just realized some hilarious confusion. “Micah Marshall” is me before I created my WordPress, and “neighborhoodotaku”/”s944222” is my name after I created my WordPress account! You thought that you were talking to two different people, but in fact they were the same person! Anyways, I’ve already sent you an email of a proposal of what I think we should do in collaboration.

  13. s944222

Hey Rob I was wondering if you might possibly want to collaborate with me. I too have a website that reviews contemporary with a Biblical approach, and I thought that if we worked together we could accomplish a lot more series than if we worked independently. If you are interested, please send me an email at:

    Hi Rob!
Just watched at least 15 episodes of Sword Art Online and it is truly addicting so far. I hope to create a Season 1 review for you and maybe you post it here?
I may use some scenes for our ministry blog because the show says a lot about what we think is real and what isn’t. Thanks!

Thanks for being who you are.

Really. Just the fact that you would make a website about anime reviews and also genuinely look at things through a Christian perspective is just super real and a testament to me that God uses everyone in the way he intended and purposed. Keep up the good work!

The Bible is my favourite fantasy novel! I love how the idea of an invisible man in the sky who watches over us can be integrated into our daily lives!e
